Some people might not like that certain aspects of the game are more streamlined there is no need to buy the basic weapons or ammunition for both soldiers and jets. A nice touch is the casualties counter which track the number of people killed due to alien activities and also the on-map reports of various events like forest fires, tidal waves and strafing runs, which might help to track a UFO outside of radar range.

The core gameplay is identical to the original – you start with one base, some interceptors, a troop transport, soldiers, scientists and engineers and slowly advance the story by assaulting shot down or landed ufos, researching alien tech, acquiring new weapons, armor, craft and vehicles up until the final mission when you save the earth for good. Then again the graphic design of the game is very nice, aesthetic and functional. Apart from the setting, the most obvious difference is seen as soon as you start the game – there is no rotating globe, just a flat map of the earth.

As a bonus to the game you get a free novella in a PDF format, titled “Crimson Dagger” by Lee Stephen, which serves as an introduction to the game setting and describes in detail the first human contact with the aliens (quite a nice read). Settings wise, the game is set in the 1980’s, during the cold war. The game itself is almost a direct clone of UFO: Enemy Unknown though there are several differences. Still some people were not satisfied by the above and wanted to recreate the experience to their liking.

This is clearly visible by the amount of games that tried to mimic its gameplay like Altar’s UFO series or UFO Extraterrestrials and XCOM Enemy Unknown to name a few. If xenonauts 2 were to improve on these while keeping the good parts of xenonauts 1 I would say it could be very good, but from what I have seen about the development so far it seems to me the devs are simply too unskilled to really know what they should be focusing on and are kind of doing random stuff that is even harmful to the game just to "justify" calling it a sequel.UFO: Enemy Unknown is one of the most influential games ever made.

Another issue is with the air combat, where losing aircraft is basically free, so you can simply spam hangars with cheap planes, and shoot each UFO the moment it appears even without really investing into air techs, which is a fundamental issue with the game design. For that I love UFO: AI, there each weapon has a role, feels unique, and they are all viable (except for the starting guns), and there is no such thing as a "laser shotgun"ģ.

Sure, you can upgrade to laser or plasma, but other than bigger numbers these mean nothing. Next is the weapon arsenal, there are what, like 5 different weapons and thats basically it for the whole game.

Plus the research texts (at least the ones in X-division) look like they were written by an edgy teenager.Ģ. nope, turns out you can interogate him, but you are just a lowly soldier, no need to burden you with knowing anything, all you need to know is to point guns in alien direction, so the interogation result is not revealed to you. So I will be able to interogate him and learn stuff right?. One day an alien just pops up at your door surrendering. And even after that the story is basically non-existent. For comparison UFO: AI did this very well with their short intro. There is no cutscene or anything to get you fired up, or establish the mood. Unless you read what the game is about beforehand you wont even know you are to defend earth from aliens. You start a campaign, and first thing you know you are to build a base. For one, the story was just plain terrible, as in basically non-existing. I wonder how many of these will be resolved in Xenonauts 2, but my hopes so far aint very high.ġ. I liked Xonanuts, but it has multiple issues.
